Resumo: In the present dissertation I intend to contribute with the field of study on relations between the civil-military dictatorship and business sector, and with this analyze and problematize, through the newspaper A Razão, the centennial commemorations of the Paraguayan War (1964-1970) in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Santa Maria had a strong military presence throughout the 20th century, and was of vital importance to the consolidation of the civil-military coup d’état, therefore I argue that the study of the conflict’s anniversary commemorations in this geographical cut is an important way to understand how one memory of the event was instrumentalized and shaped in order to justify the coup and the following dictatorship. The festivities relating to the theme occurred in the city over the course of the nearly six years, with emphasis on battles that had prominent participation of the city’s regiments or important figures. I argue that the memory of the conflict was used to legitimize the civil-military dictatorship, with the fight against “subversion” being presented as continuity of historical battles of the past, reinforcing the role of the Armed Forces as defenders of the nation. The present work is inserted in the Memory and Heritage research line and is financed by the CAPES/DS program.
