Resumo: | This research explores the potential of geotourism as a tool for environmental conservation and sustainable development in the Emerald Coast territory, located in Santa Catarina, Brazil. This region, comprising the municipalities of Itapema, Porto Belo, and Bombinhas, boasts an exuberant landscape heritage but faces significant challenges due to rapid urbanization and real estate speculation. The objective of this work is to identify and characterize the landscape heritage of the Emerald Coast territory to support public conservation policies and enhance the promotion and appreciation of the region’s geotourism potential. To achieve this goal, the research proposes to map and analyze the landscape units of the region, taking into account geodiversity, biodiversity, and sociocultural aspects. Additionally, the thesis aims to develop criteria for the identification and valorization of Landscape Interest Points (LIPs) and to propose interpretive tools and geotourism routes that encourage the appreciation and conservation of these sites. Finally, the study seeks to provide a basis for the formulation of public policies that harmonize economic development with environmental protection. The methodology adopted combines geographic, environmental, and social analyses with landscape mapping and classification techniques, resulting in a detailed inventory of LIPs. The results obtained indicate that Emerald Coast has vast geotourism potential, and the detailed mapping of landscape units and identification of LIPs provided a solid foundation for the creation of valorization and conservation strategies. The strategies developed include the elaboration of landscape prototypes and the creation of geotourism routes integrating the LIPs. It is concluded that geotourism can be an effective tool for the conservation of landscape heritage and the sustainable development of Emerald Coast. The appreciation of LIPs through interpretive strategies is fundamental to ensuring that tourism practices respect and preserve the landscape heritage. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the valorization and conservation of Emerald Coast landscape heritage, offering a model of analysis and planning adaptable to other regions. The integration of scientific knowledge with conservation strategies and public policies can promote a balanced coexistence with nature and ensure the sustainable use of resources. In this context, geotourism presents itself as a promising strategy, capable of transforming areas with high landscape value but low tourism performance into popular destinations while contributing to the preservation and appreciation of these landscapes. |
