This work was developed to evaluate the pollutant load of water and litter, transmitted by the net of urban drainage, in two catchments, located at Santa Maria RS. Water quality and litter data were collected and compared between catchments and used to determine how they are affected by variables such as precipitation, land use, physical characteristic of the area and antecedent dry weather period. The cachtment Cancela area is 4,95km², with 56% of urban area; the size of cachtment Alto da Colina is 3,34 km², with 22,3% of urban area. Water quality characteristics were evaluated through the parameters: BOD, total and faecal coliforms, electric conductivity, turbidity, pH, solid suspended and temperature. The litter were appraise through the quantification in weight and volume. The results indicate that the catchment Cancela presented larger diffuse and litter load than the catchment Alto da Colina, showing the degradation process, associate to the characteristics of each studied area, as size and, mainly, to use and occupation of the soil. The two areas present high degradation process due to human activities such as the growth of urbanization, the sewer spilling and release of litter in the receiving bodies.
