Resumo: The use of wood for different purposes is a known reality. The cutting of trees and the unfolding of wood with chainsaw helps both operators and rural producers and is actively in the routine of the rural population. In view of the lack of information on the use, maintenance and conservation status of chainsaws, this work aimed to characterize the use, conservation and maintenance of Otto cycle chainsaws used by Central Region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Questionnaires were applied and chainsaws were checked by rural producers, totaling 73 machines. Based on the results obtained, it was possible to observe that 62% of the rural producers that participated in the research have incomplete elementary education and 32% are between 51 and 60 years of age. Of those interviewed, 96% said they had not received training and/or received technical instructions for their use. The chainsaw is used in 56.16% by the producer and his relatives performing the sectioning of wood in 91.8% of the cases his property; 74,0% carry out the cutting of trees, 45,2% do the unfolding of wood. None of the interviewees reported making use of full protective clothing (EPI). About the marks, five brands and 14 models were found. As for the safety devices, the right and left hand protectors were found in conditions of use. With regard to the mechanisms that protect and assist the operator, as the throttle and chain brake, 71,2 and 53,4%, respectively, of these mechanisms were in use. The correct starting method of the chainsaw made by the rural producers, in soil, is executed in 41% of the interviewed and the same number of producers carries out the maintenance of their own machine. Rural producers state that they don’t know the technique of grinding chain saw teeth in 71% of the interviewees. In relation to the cutting set, 72,3% of the rural producers performed the inversion of the saber; 61,6% used chain oil indicated by the manufacturer and 81% didn’t have defined grinding angle of the teeth. As for compliace the motor assembly; 90% of the air filters presented were dirty and, 78% did not take the fuel out after work. The state of conservation, use and maintenance of verified chainsaws was considered as serious, since most rural producers have low levels of schooling and little knowledge about the necessary maintenance and handling techniques of these machines.
