Resumo: This research aims to analyze the practices and the permanencies related to death and dying of the city of São Cristóvão in the second half of the 19th century (1864-1886). The city of São Cristóvão was founded in 1590 by Cristóvão de Barros, located in the state of Sergipe, which was capital until March 17, 1855, when the president of the province of Sergipe, Inácio Barbosa raised the town of Santo Antônio do Aracaju in the city of Aracaju, and made the change of the capital of the province, is the fourth oldest city in Brazil. The sacristonvenses had a strong familiarity with their dead, performed several funeral rituals, some had begun while still alive, others in death, both are explored during the work. We will analyze the funeral rituals performed in life, such as the writing of the will, the performance of the sacraments, the procession of viaticum; the funeral rites performed after death, the use of the shroud, the commissioning of the soul procession; and the places of burial. We use as a source: the wills, inventories, death row book number 1 (1864-1886) of the Parish of Our Lady of Victory (Mother Church), the Reports of the Presidents of the Province of Sergipe Del Rey on: Cemeteries, Hospitals and Health Public. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to obtain better use of information from sources.
