Resumo: |
Based on Discourse Analysis, this study investigates journalistic materials which have addressed repercussions on the question of Palestine in Folha de S. Paulo newspaper. The focus on the question of Palestine is mainly due to the fact that the conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, named the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, over the years, consequently led to the propagation of various discourses, many of them crossed by what Said (2007) calls Orientalism at the service of a continuous imperialist project of the West in relation to the East. Another relevant factor is that, academically, we have been able to verify few research productions which deal with this theme, especially in the context of Language Studies and, therefore, we see the need to bring the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Discourse Analysis in order to reflect on this issue. The research is structured in five chapters, namely. I. “Introduction”; II. "Theoretical and methodological foundations"; III. "The question of Palestine: a brief historical journey"; IV. "Analysis of the journalistic discourse on the question of Palestine in Folha de S. Paulo (1948): in the heat of the event"; V. "Analysis of the journalistic discourse on the issue of Palestine in Folha de S. Paulo (after 1948): current affairs and memory". The discursive corpus that composes this doctoral thesis is formed by journalistic materials that circulated in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo in two distinct moments of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. The initial time frame is May 1948, when Palestine was occupied by the Israelis, then we have registered two contemporary moments, July 2014 and May 2021, when there were heavy attacks in the Gaza Strip, since the attack in July was considered one of the bloodiest in the history of the conflict. For the analysis of the collected materiality, we have mobilized some of the main notions of Discourse Analysis: discursive formation, ideological formation, interdiscourse, form-subject of discourse (PÊCHEUX, 2009 [1988]), silencing (ORLANDI, 2007). In addition, we have proposed a theoretical articulation with the studies of Gattaz (2002), Said (2007) and Pappé (2016) in order to understand the so-called question of Palestine, Orientalism and the process of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. It is worth noting that we are also concerned with understanding how the circulation and reach of this journalistic discourse contribute to the silencing of a people and their erasure as an idea of a nation, evidencing a complex network of discursive relationship considering the materiality of language in its two inseparable aspects: the linguistic and the historical. |
