Resumo: This thesis sims to investigate the general preparatory exams in Sergipe, from 1873 to 1934. The main objective is to analyze the process of institutionalization of these exams in secondary education in Sergipe, given the contributions they brought to institutions and students high school students. They helped to rebuild part of the school culture through the actions and rituals developed for the preparation and admission of candidates in higher education. I justify the time frame from the survey and analysis of sources. The initial year corresponds to Decree No. 5.429 of October 2nd, 1873, which validated and implemented commissions for preparatory examinations in Provinces where there were no faculties, such as Sergipe, Brazil. I defined the final year, 1934, based on the Francisco Campos Reform (Decree No. 21,241 of November 18th, 1932), which suppressed the preparatory exams, giving way to vestibular exams. Although the Reformation dates back to 1932, there was a period of reservations and adaptations to the new regime. Thus, I defined the final year based on the analysis of the last minute book located. The results of the exams carried out in December 1934 were collected. The locus of the present investigation was Atheneu Sergipense and Colégio Parthenon Sergipense. However, without forgetting those who gathered clients for the provision of these exams. Regarding the methodology, I followed the one based on the assumptions of the History of Education, from the perspective of the New Cultural History. This choice considered the concepts of school institutions and cultural capital by Pierre Bourdieu (2013; 1998); exams, by Pierre Bourdieu, and Jean-Claude Passeron (2009); school culture according to Viñao Frago (1994; 1995); and school subjects by Chervel (1990). The documental sources chosen, located in physical and digital collections, are multiple: regulations, decrees, presidents' reports, minutes books, registration books, qualification certificates, declarations, newspapers, and the Sergipano Bio-Bibliographic Diccionario (GUARANÁ, 1925). Therefore, I defend the thesis that the general preparatory exams, as part of the school culture of secondary education in Sergipe in the last decades of the 19th and early 20th century, brought significant contributions both to the institutions involved and to the candidates who attended them. Besides, they helped young students in the search for the strengthening and perpetuation of cultural capital, considering that they allowed access to higher-level studies. Thus, the research sought to reconstruct the history of a regime so criticized by the classics of our historiography, thus contributing to the History of Education in Sergipe, above all to the works that guide the themes of student evaluation and secondary education.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
