Resumo: |
The present thesis aims to analyze the cultural heritage of the Itamaracá Island (PE) from the beginning of its colonization process, with emphasis on pointing out how maritimity has influenced cultural choices over the centuries. The island, located on the northern coast of the state of Pernambuco, was inserted since the beginning of the sixteenth century on the route of vessels with different European flags that aimed to explore its natural resources while consolidating the colonial structure. The natural condition of the island, separated from the mainland by the Canal de Santa Cruz, made possible the use of its two bars as a commercial warehouse. The intensity of life linked to the sea provided provided the inhabitants of the island with the offer of a very diverse material culture. To complete the broader meaning of Maritime Cultural Landscape as a methodological option, we also use cultural manifestations, toponymy and the current uses of island maritime spaces. The powers and sociability expressed in the maritime landscape of the Island of Itamaracá are part of our text to present a point of view not yet addressed in relation to the object. |
