Resumo: The clerk profession was practiced in several Brazilian cities in the 20th century and had an important contribution to the diversification of the commercial gear of the urban centers, being numerous and diversified the employees who exercised it. In Sergipe, more specifically in Aracaju, the clerks worked in various branches of local commerce and comprised a portion of urban workers. For this reason, this research investigates the trajectory of these workers in Sergipe and uses the newspaper A Classe, an organ of the Association of Employees in Commerce of Sergipe (AECS), to better understand them during the 1920s and 1930s. Journal taking into account its institutional character and how much it obeys the laws and standards of the journalistic field, which influence the form and content of its editions. In addition, it seeks to understand how the newspaper A Classe forged social representations about Sergipe clerks and the way employees used the written press to publicize their claims. Consequently, the research is based on theoretical and historiographical contributions as well as on documentary typologies, including: newspapers, images, institutional reports, government messages, labor legislation and commercial code.
