Resumo: This study aims to understand the configuration of English Language discipline in Atheneu Sergipense College, between the years 1870 and 1877. The time frame corresponds to the year in which the Atheneu Sergipense College was created with the entry of the first English language teacher to the year it was set up and regulated the standards for the first entry exam in the chair of the discipline. Therefore, this research is based on the concepts of School Discipline according to Chervel (1990), School Culture of Viñao Frago (1994) and Juliá (2011), and curriculum by Goodson's (1997). Then we mapped the teachers of English discipline, namely: Justiniano de Mello e Silva and Ascendino Ângelo dos Reis in order to comprehendthe configuration of these teachers' work, their performances and contributions to consolidation of English language teaching in Atheneu Sergipense. Finally, we interpret the books worked in the institution as well as the contents, methods, approaches, intentions and authors. To carry out this research, we used as resources the minutes of the Atheneu Sergipense Congregation, the compendiums History of Rome by Goldsmith and Elementos de gramatica ingleza by Dr. Antonio Franco da Costa Meirelles, Public Instruction reports , the Atheneu Sergipense Regulations, Laws governing education in the period and the Journal of Aracaju. Finally, this research has enabled us to understand that the consolidation of English Language discipline in Atheneu Sergipense College was based on essentially grammatical approach over the years with the inclusion of conversational elements.
