This research had as general purpose to investigate social and environmental indicators groups to the Universidade Federal de Sergipe (UFS) under of the optic of the sustainable development having as specific objectives: to identify the indicators of the social and environmental sustainability present at University; to measure the sustainable of the University from selected indicators. Therefore, it was utilized the following indicators, namely: spent materials by the institution that cause environmental impacts as consumptions of paper (chlorinated and recycled white) and printing ink cartridges; Waste destinations (common, recyclable, chemical and infectious); accuracy of Forestation and Sewage Treatment Plant in UFS, Institutional Capacity and indicators related to the Education, Research and Extension in the institution. With regard to the approach, it is a qualitative and quantitative, exploratory and descriptive research and whose procedures were based in studies of bibliographic and documentary stamp, conducting semi-structured interviews with the managers of the UFS sectors. Finally, analysis of the data was made by identifying the dimensions of social and environmental sustainability. As a result it detected difficulties both in terms of social sustainability, the environmental sustainability of the Federal University of Sergipe due to the lack of institutional planning concerning the environmental aspects; continuity purposes started by previous administrations and implements by researchers at the institution. Thus it was pointed out that the main barriers are related to the lack of a permanent technical environmental structure in HEIs; lack of appropriate structure of environmental information example of a database that can support the commitment of the actions of the institution through a proper monitoring of these indicators at the Federal University of Sergipe to ensure social and environmental sustainability. |
