Resumo: This work deals with the relationship established among the native language of the person, the theories of the language and the methods of foreign language teaching. The native language is an instrument of great value to the foreign language teaching and constitutes a tool that gives access to the numerous structures that compose the psychism of the individual both to know them and to direct them to act in the acquisition of a second language. The knowledge about the psychic structures related to the communication allows us to gather data that can point the elements that are present in the foreign language teaching and learning. The theories of the language offer a reasonable amount of concepts and proposals that can be applied to establishment of language teaching methods. The researches about the bilinguism show a great amount of actions and reactions of the psychism during the process of acquisition of a second language. The knowledge gathered from those researches indicates the most adequate means to the development of language teaching methods that include all the agents present in the communication process: the native language of the subject (and consequently its psychism) the practical use of some concepts presented by the language theories and the proceedings themselves that are part of the foreign language teaching methods.
