Resumo: The food and nutritional security conditions of a population are closely related to access to water. Research has shown that policies that promote water accessibility positively influence the living conditions of beneficiary families. Likewise, it is already scientifically recognized that Food Insecurity is more present in the rural environment when compared to the urban environment. However, the number of surveys on the beneficiaries' perception of social programs is small. This study aimed to know the perception of the beneficiaries of Cisternas Calçadão on the effect of these equipments on their lives, focusing on the Food and Nutrition Security situation of the household. A qualitative, longitudinal study was carried out with families from two municipalities in the Alagoan Semi-arid region: Igaci-AL and Craíbas-AL in the years 2013 and 2016. The sample of households was carried out for convenience, considering parameters recommended by Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros, partner institution in the research, being inclusion criteria to be beneficiary of the Cisternas Calçadão. For both years, questionnaires were applied. In 2013, the questionnaire included socioeconomic and demographic information, as well as household situation, access to water, health conditions of the residents, family agricultural production and income as early as 2016 in addition to the information contained in the 2013 questionnaire, the questionnaire contained questions regarding the conditions after the implantation of the Cisterns and also counted on the analysis of the farmers' perception, through the Free Evocation Technique. The instrument was elaborated specifically for this purpose, subsidized by the PNAD questionnaire (BRASIL, 2009).Nutritional status was assessed by measuring weight and height and waist circumference. The diagnosis was made using the cut-off points recommended by the Ministry of Health. Food consumption markers, Ministry of Health were used. In addition, the Brazilian Scale of Food and Nutritional Insecurity was applied and three focus groups were carried out in order to know the perception of the heads of households. This study composes a larger study conducted by Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros, from Sergipe, and was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Sergipe. 109 people from 29 families were evaluated. The study showed a high prevalence of overweight and high risk for cardiovascular diseases, in addition to reduced fruit intake. The results revealed low family income, as well as low level of schooling of their bosses. The cisterns were characterized as the main source of water supply and the plantation in the field as the main activity. In view of the information, it was observed that Food Insecurity is a present problem in these families. Despite this, it is possible to highlight the positive perception by the families about the productive aspects that contribute to the SAN after the implantation of cisterns, such as food diversification, food improvement and even income generation. The importance of water access programs for the promotion of food production and small animal husbandry within public policies to guarantee SAN, associated with Food and Nutrition Education in the life of these beneficiaries, and the presence of technical assistance to guide these families.
