Resumo: Introduction: Adverse events related to drugs are among the most common failures in health care, and are defined as preventable events that can lead, in fact or in potential, the misuse of drugs. In this sense, patient safety has become a concern of the Ministry of Health, which has been leaning on building strategies to minimize these events. Thus, in 2013 it launched the Safety Program Patient and subsequently the security protocol in prescription, use and administration of drugs, a document that provides recommendations to make the process safe medication. Objective: To analyze the drug delivery process performed by nursing professionals, according to the security protocol in prescription, use and drug administration ( BRAZIL, 2013) in two intensive care units of a public reference hospital in the state of Sergipe / Brazil. Materials and methods: study with quantitative approach, descriptive and cross-sectional. For data collection we used three instruments. The first aimed to describe characteristics of the units that interfere in the medication administration process, the second, to observe the stages of preparation and administration of drugs, and the third, to characterize the participants of the research nurses. The non-probabilistic sample by convenience was established by observation 1159 doses prepared and administered for 67 nurses. For data analysis was used descriptive and analytical statistics, and was calculated membership fee to check items for safe medication administration .Results: In both units the prescription is the standard type and scanned and dispensing of unit dose type. Moreover, it was observed that not professionals regarding the use of protocols for preparation and administration of drugs and had no notification routine to medication errors. The highest rates were somewhat (98.38%), one route (85.93%), right medication (65.09%) and a certain amount (51.56 %). In contrast, the lowest rates were found in the right patient items (32.06 %), right log (25.39 %), right time (34.24%) and right orientation (1.15%). Conclusion: The process of medication administration at the units need to be rethought as the construction of strategies and barriers that can make it more secure , especially in relation to items that showed lower adherence . It is hoped that this study will encourage future interventions related to the construction of a safe medication process.
