Resumo: Leprosy is an infectious contagious disease of high morbidity and highly stigmatizing. It presents in Brazil, especially in the North, Midwest and Northeast, very high prevalence that is considered above that established by Health Organization (WHO) of less than 1 case/10000 inhabitants. Despite the efforts of the Department of Health, through the National Programme of Leprosy Control (PNCH), operational difficulties are still faced for the implementation of guidelines and actions recommended by the Department through their ordinances, in all its fullness, to disease’s control. This work aims to characterize the affected population and study how the model of care to leprosy has been implemented in Boa Vista (RR) in July 2010 to June 2012.Methods: Quantitative and cross-sectional study conducted by descriptive analysis of the variables obtained from the registration records of the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (Sinan), and their medical records. Results: The city was ranked as high endemicity. The care model was characterized as centralized, with a predominance of late diagnoses and poor percentage of evaluated contacts. The authors conclude that the standards and guidelines recommended by Ordinance No. 3125/MS still need to be implemented effectively in the municipality.
