Resumo: This study addresses pirarucu (Arapaima spp) fishing in the Amazon, with the Middle and part of the Alto Solimões region as a study area, an area cataloged by scientific academic history as a Tefé area. Its main objective was to analyze the fishery managed by pirarucu as a social technology and public policy for socio-environmental development in the Amazon. The research was carried out based on primary and secondary, historical, and academic documentation covering the period from 1897 to 1996. The results obtained reveal that the use of conventional technology in the fishing of pirarucu (Arapaima gigas), in the Amazon, placed this endangered species; caused a negative impact on the food source of fishery populations, including those based on agri-fisheries; generated the need for the movement to defend the lakes; triggered socio-environmental agrarian conflicts with loss of human lives; demanded the elaboration of a public policy proposal that subsidized the regulation of the management of pirarucu by law; a process that, with documentary evidence of fact and of law, remains to be proved that the managed fishing for pirarucu is characterized as social technology and public policy for the socioenvironmental development of the Amazon.
