Resumo: This work aims to analyze the access to social security rights by family farmers, considering as an example families that live in Guapimirim, a town of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Initially, we conducted a bibliographical review concerning family farmer retirements, focusing on the importance of representative institutions, the access to justice and the implementation of public policies. Building on a participatory methodological basis, ethnographic studies, field visits and individual and collective interviews were carried out, which allowed for a closer diagnosis of the reality, including the difficulties of access to retirement that Guapimirim rural workers face. A case study was carried out, which contributed to a better understanding of what is known of individual, organizational, social and political phenomena. In this dissertation, the trajectory of families that live the reality of family farming is described, portraying how these workers perform their activities autonomously, inserted in the family economy. For social security purposes, that is, the right to retirement, these workers are identified as belonging to a special category. Although such a status represents a benefit, there is a considerable amount of bureaucratic requirements that cause difficulties in the retirement process. This work, therefore, has served to better understand the reality of rural workers and to make their demands explicit, clarifying how universities can contribute toward facilitating the access to retirement by family farmers.
