Resumo: The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the technical quality of the Handbook for the Insertion of Monograph Data into Base Minerva (Manual para a Entrada de Dados de Monografias na Base Minerva), used by librarians of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) dedicated to cataloguing. The study was conducted from a consumer-based standpoint. Evaluation standards in the categories of utility, propriety and accuracy of the Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation were consulted and adapted in order to subsidize the creation of the evaluation tool. With 19 items, the tool has been technically validated by an evaluation expert and its content has been validated by two librarians from UFRJ. The tool has been sent by electronic means to cataloguers and 50 answers were received. The evaluation results evidence the compliance of the Handbook with utility standards, which had the best performance, and accuracy standards, whose compliance level were the highest and most balanced in the study. As to the adequacy standards, only half of them have been complied with. The evaluation evidences that the Handbook, given its technical qualities, plays the role of guiding the Institution cataloging activities. The study suggests improvements on the variety of examples and scope of information provided, considering the peculiarities of the items of each collection and the professional experience of cataloguers.
