This dissertation is concerned with the playful and innovative aspect of Ana Maria Machado´s books for children and adolescents and aims to identify and analyse the linguistic processes used by the writer to give shape and expressive force to the fictional universe created by her. A stylistic approach has been adopted, with a new to examining the texts in their phonic, morphe-lexical, lexico-semantic and syntactic aspects, interrelating them with the basic meanings of the texts and with the special approach given to the stories told. By means of a survey and analysis of the linguistic-expressive resources that characterize Ana Maria Machado’s style, an attempt is made, in the last analysis, to highlight the importance of contemporary Brazilian literature for children and adolescents, showing the level of expression attained by the genre through the study of the work of one of its most distinguished representatives.
