Resumo: There are few studies who talk about the act of going up or down a step, even though this is one of the most difficult and dangerous activities of daily life when the motor function is compromised. Using surface electromyography (sEMG) and kinematics, we studied such movement, aiming at characterizing the movement kinematics and understanding of the role of each muscle in each step of the movement. We performed a data collection from a sample of 11 young healthy adults as well as a systematic review with metanalysis in order to find out if there is a pattern for this movement. The selected studies published in the last 10 years showed high heterogeneity of studies due to different factors, particularly the average height of the samples studied and the height of the steps. The collected data were compared intra and inter-participants and a certain movement pattern was found. Therefore, the search for normative values requires prior protocol standardization and a homogenization of the samples, and more studies are needed to advance to a conclusion that reflects reality
