Resumo: | An exploratory, descriptive study of the practice of males nurses in the Private Hospital Network (P.H.N.) was done with the purposes of identifying the tasks they perform, checking their feelings toward their job and analyzing the impelling and/or restrictive factors involved in the performance of the male nurse’s professional activity. The population studied comprised the practitioners at Goiânia's P.H.N., with each hospital having up to 40 or more beds. The data ware obtained by questionary. The study showed that there are few male nurses in the P.H.N.; and the there are a number of institutions where this professional is not found. For the most part, the male nurses are engaged in administrative work and professional misplacement. Close patient care is given only in complex situations. Most of the male nurses declared to be unhappy with the work in the P.H.N., since the relation between the work done and the personal and/or professional expectations is gloomy. The relative autonomy and the satisfactory interpersonal relations are the positive aspects of a male nurse's work. The dichotomy between the teaching and the professional practice of nursing was evidenced. |
