The present work discuss the development and the evaluation of the architectural design of health units for ambulatorial attendance in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The historical evolution and the design of these buildings, the description of the Health System, the current situation of the health attendance localization in the municipal district and which elements – criteria and/or parameters – to consider in the architectural design are approached. The environment performance of the construcion is evaluated according to five case studies, each one with a decadal characteristic design in the municipal district. The positive and negative points in the design and the new aspects according to the users' opinion and aspirations are considered.
