Resumo: Brazilian system operators and planners have experienced new challenges related to the high penetration of wind power in the energy matrix. The variability of the wind resource associated with the difficulty of forecasting this kind of generation in the short term requires the allocation of a flexible energy reserve capable of compensating possible imbalances between load and generation. The reduction of the storage capacity by means of regularization reservoirs, the hydrological crisis in the Northeast and the Brazilian commitment to comply with greenhouse gas emission reduction targets indicate the need for investment in other alternatives than the hydraulic and thermal reserve, that may add operational flexibility to the system in face of the variability in wind generation. This work proposes a model for the use of batteries applied to energy management with the objective of reducing the variability of wind power generation and minimize the load loss in generation deficit scenarios. A computational model was developed in order to represent the main aspects and operational limitations of the batteries behavior, enabling an adequate technical analysis of the application of this technology in power systems. The results of the model simulation tests indicate that the use of batteries for these purposes is promising, depending on the technological evolution and it consequent reduction of costs.
