Resumo: The popular Brazilian music is marked by a wide variety of genres and styles that make this social expression an important element of Brazil’s cultural identity. Within this broad universe, various composers and performers gained notoriety from the singularities of their works. Such works, within the context of national popular music, are musical expressions related to the path of life, cultural background and values that underlie the production of each artist. Considering this scenery, this work specifically addresses the career and work of Guinga, stage name of composer, singer and guitarist Carlos Althier de Souza Lemos Escobar, aiming to present, analyze and discuss aesthetic and cultural characteristics of his artistic production, especially from the analysis of CD Noturno Copacabana. The work is based on qualitative research, consolidated from the epistemic and methodological bases of ethnomusicology and from investigative and analytical perspectives in the field of popular music. Thus, the research was consolidated from bibliographical studies; within ethnomusicology and related fields who are dedicated to the study of popular music; from documentary research covering music, especially the official songbook of Noturno Copacabana and full arrangements of songs on this CD; as well as interviews with the composer, lyricists , musicians, performers and arrangers. The research highlighted important aspects of Guinga’s music production, pointing especially elements that defined their place within the Brazilian popular music. So the study revealed defining aspects of the work of Guinga, more specifically in the analyzed CD, emphasizing the particularities that form the musical instrumentation, arrangements, melodic and harmonic characteristics, the structure of lyrics; the evidenced musical genres and aesthetics and vocal interpretation. From the study, we found that Guinga’s compositional and stylistic style, evidenced from the analysis of the CD Noturno Copacabana, is marked by a diversity of elements that are fundamentally related to their life journey and cultural training. It may be noted that Guinga have enhanced a defined acoustic sound, especially by the expressive idiosyncrasy of his guitar, an instrument that serves as the basis for compositions and creates important part of the sonic identity of the musician’s work. The composer’s work incorporates a variety of Brazilian musical genres, but brings to his production characteristics more generally associated with the genre MPB, applied to a particular way of doing baião, samba, modinha, maxixe, among others. Also worth mentioning is the influence and use of aesthetic features of genres from other cultural backgrounds, such as blues and jazz, demonstrating that the composer do not restrict himself to Brazil’s cultural borders. Summing up, the inferences of the study allow to realize the complexity, diversity and uniqueness that make the work of Guinga unparalleled by their idiosyncratic traits, also makes it plural by the links the artist establishes with varied expressions of national music.
