Resumo: Introduction: The multidimensional changes in the elderly person entail a greater occurrence of chronic conditions and hospitalizations. According to the assumptions of Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory, nursing takes a leading role in the care process and Comfort is the desirable holistic result of this care. Objective: To unveil the need for Comfort in the perception of hospitalized elderly people, using Kolcaba’s Theory. Method: The methodological structure had a qualitative and descriptive approach, with 11 elderly patients admitted to the an University Hospital. The collection was performed from November to December 2018, through semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews, encompassing questions regarding the profile of the participants and related to the needs of Comfort based on the theory. The empirical material was analyzed from Bardin’s technique. During the research, the ethical aspects that regulate the research involving human beings were respected, with approval of the Ethics Committee nº 2.853.889-PB. Results: They were categorized into four thematic units: Physical, Environmental, Sociocultural and Psychospiritual. In the Physical Context, the subcategories of symptom relief, daily life activities, hygiene and personal care, food, sleep and rest were identified. In the Environmental context, in some cases, Comfort was considered superior to that of the home itself. In the Sociocultural context, there was the distancing of family bonds, arousing feelings of longing and isolation. In the Psychospiritual context, spirituality and religiosity were noted as ways of coping, which are capable of overcoming the situation caused by illness. Final considerations: To unveil the needs for Comfort of hospitalized elderly people enables us to reflect on nursing care, with a view to promoting a holistic and comprehensive interaction, providing subsidies to enhance care and meeting the actual needs of the elderly person.
