Resumo: This study deals with the analysis of physical accessibility conditions that allow the elderly to take ownership of public space, as a case study with a square and a park in the city of João Pessoa - PB, identifying the biological and functional losses that they acquire due to aging process in order to verify the physical needs of this unique portion of the population, and study the environments of urban public spaces, making sure that the activities practiced by the elderly and how they take ownership of these sites. It is known that numerous studies related to the design of environments for the elderly are generally directed to nursing homes and/or residential, but a large proportion of elderly people use urban public open spaces, especially parks and squares, so the city needs to provide spaces adequate urban specificities of the public. For the development of the research was accomplished, first, the theoretical foundation, which addressed topics such as the elderly, public space, the aging process and accessibility. For the research field was used, first, systematic observation, with the characterization of public spaces and the production of behavioral maps, then applied the evaluation script that had as main objective the identification of architectural barriers, and Finally, there were the questionnaires, characterizing the target audience and knowing what they comprehend about accessibility of the sites surveyed. The data were analyzed and, along with information obtained during the theoretical basis, resulted in propositions about design focused on physical accessibility, the principles of universal design and regulatory legislation, aiming to bring improvements to this portion of the population in the use of urban public spaces in general.
