This research has as its theme the environmental impacts generated by cemeteries with a case study of São Luís do Maranhão, in his eleven establishments. The goal is to analyze the environmental impacts generated by the cemeteries of São Luís, noting the implications arising from the contamination of soil, air and groundwater, to form an updated database for future research on the environmental impacts generated by cemeteries. Through a historical overview of the research approaches since the passage of the burials in the interiors of churches, through the emergence of the first cemeteries until today. There is an analysis of the existing cemeteries in São Luís and its suitability to current legislation, in particular the norm CETESB and CONAMA Resolution, concluding with a proposed alternative less harmful for the final disposal of solid waste of human remains.
