Resumo: | The decline in the time of practice of physical activity over the age is widely described in the literature and adolescence represents the period in which the reductions of greater magnitude are observed. In this sense, it is necessary to identify its determinants, especially those that can be modified through interventions. Self-efficacy and the environment characteristics are constructs of several theories has been associated to physical activity level. This study analyzed if the perception of self-efficacy and the environment characteristics are determinant of the time of decline in the physical activity in adolescents. This is a longitudinal observational study that used data from the LONCAAFS – Longitudinal Study on Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity, Eating Habits and Adolescent Health, conducted with adolescents from public schools in the municipality of João Pessoa, Paraíba, from 2014 to 2017. A questionnaire was used, through a face-to-face interview, to collect data on variables, sex, age, mother's schooling, economic class, residence time in the neighborhood and physical activity, and scales for the perception of self-efficacy (4 items) and environment characteristics (16 items, 8 for physical activity, 4 for urban safety and 4 for traffic safety). Body mass and height measurements were performed to determine the body mass index. Binary and ordinal logistic regression were useds to verify the association between the perception of self-efficacy, the characteristics of the environment and the decline in the time of practice of physical activity. The Stata 13.0 program was used to carry out the analyzes and the significance level was set at p < 0.05. Complete data were analyzed from 355 adolescents, with a mean age of 11.8 + 0.1 years old and 57.2% female. There was a trend of decline (p < 0.001) in the mean time of moderate to vigorous physical activity (58.3 + 13.7 minutes / week / year) and an increase in physical activity scores (0.6 + 0.1 point / year); urban security (0.2 + 0.1 point / year); traffic safety per year (0.5 + 0.1 point / year). However, therefore, mean self-efficacy scores did not show significant differences. It was concluded that the perception of self-efficacy and environment characteristics were not determinant of the decline in the time of practice of physical activity |
