Resumo: Security management in healthcare services to prevent incidents plays a fundamental role in reducing risks and harm to patients. This study aims to analyze the nursing team's perception of patient safety management in the maternity ward at Hospital Nacional Simão Mendes. This is a study with a qualitative approach that took place in the Maternity Unit of the Hospital Nacional Simão Mendes, located in Guinea-Bissau. Members of the nursing team participated in the study, 7 nurses and 6 midwives. For data collection, the semi-structured interview technique was used, carried out in the period between October and November 2022. The empirical material was organized and based on the content analysis method, according to Bardin. The project was approved by the National Health Research Ethics Committee of Guinea-Bissau. The results are presented in seven thematic categories: knowledge about patient safety and adverse events; occurrence of adverse events; protocols of international patient safety goals; management teams and ongoing education on patient safety in the maternity ward; strategies adopted to reduce errors in care, the influence of working conditions on the quality of care and the contradictions between the interviewees' narratives and the reality found. It was concluded that the professionals at the maternity hospital studied do not have adequate and sufficient knowledge about patient safety. The results will serve as guiding elements to support the implementation and improvement of public health policies aimed at patient safety and strengthening the culture of safety in care, considering the specificities and singularities of the Guinean health system.
