Resumo: The dissertation on screen has the general objective of analyzing the relationship between student assistance and the academic trajectory of students benefited by PNAES at UFRPE. As specific objectives, it was intended to outline the profile of these students; characterize student assistance at UFRPE, as well as identify elements that favor university retention and dropout. To this end, this study reflected on the transformations that have occurred in the last decades in public higher education, through the expansion process of the Federal Higher Education Institutions (IFES), together with the policies of democratization of access and permanence, the affirmative actions for the education, the phenomenon of retention and evasion and trends in the mechanisms for evaluating public policies. These themes were translated into fundamental categories in the analysis of the researched object. In order to understand the relationship between student assistance and academic trajectories, we sought, in the first place, to contextualize student assistance in Brazil, punctuating the advances and setbacks of the policy, as well as describing how it is implemented in the referred educational institution and how the policies are elaborated. evaluation and monitoring processes of this public. In order to carry out the research, a universe of 55 (fifty-five) students was studied who were disconnected from UFRPE's student assistance programs for failing or failing grades in all subjects of an entire semester in the year 2019. analyzes were made using Excel spreadsheets used in the Pro-Rectory work routine, through which it was possible to elaborate 10 (ten) variables that allow identifying the profile of this audience, as well as indicating elements of the intersection between student support and development of their academic trajectories. As a result, it was observed that in relation to the profile, these are students who experience difficulties in accessing goods and services, given their condition of social vulnerability. Regarding the characteristics related to the academic itinerary, the study revealed that the majority come from public schools in high school and are enrolled in courses in the area of engineering knowledge, with no disparity between academic units. Regarding elements more linked to student assistance, the research reveals that the majority was disconnected for presenting total disapproval in one semester due to lack despite being benefited by the transport aid, which aims to subsidize the mobility of students. Although preliminary and innovative, this research elucidates important elements for understanding the relationship between student assistance and academic itineraries.
