Resumo: | Introduction: in pediatric oncology, Palliative Care aims to provide integral and humanized assistance to improve the quality of life of children and offer support to their families in facing the disease throughout the bereavement process, with the participation of nurses as team members being of paramount importance. This thesis was conceived within the article modality and it contemplated three studies. The review article entitled "Dissertations and Theses on Palliative Care in Pediatric Oncology: a bibliometric study" aimed to characterize bibliometric indicators of studies originated from dissertations and theses on Palliative Care in Pediatric Oncology defended in Post-Graduation Programs in the Brazilian scenario. A reduced number of studies from dissertations and theses on Palliative Care in Pediatric Oncology defended in Post Graduation Programs in the Brazilian scenario have been identified. The original articles aimed to: analyze the nurses' performance in assisting children with cancer in Palliative Care who were terminally ill, in the light of the Peaceful End-of-Life Theory; and analyze the nurses' performance in assisting the families of the children with cancer in Palliative Care who were terminally ill. Methodology: this is a field research of qualitative nature, which is guided by the Peaceful End-of-Life Theory. The study was carried out in a leading philanthropic oncology hospital in the city of João Pessoa - PB, Brazil. Fifteen nurses participated in the research. Data collection was carried out from October to December 2019, using the interview technique. The research project was approved by a Research Ethics Committee with the legal opinion number 3.303.655. The content analysis technique and the Peaceful End-of-Life Theory premises were used for the data analysis. Results: two manuscripts have been produced based on qualitative analysis: Nursing assistance to children with cancer in Palliative Care for a peaceful end of life; Nursing assistance to the families of children with cancer in Palliative Care in the terminal phase. The first study highlighted the communication aimed at providing comfort, pain relief, promoting peace, and valuing dignity, autonomy, and closeness with loved ones for a peaceful end of life. The second study emphasized the importance of the children's families' presence to promote peace to them during their terminal stage of life and the importance of comfort in nursing assistance to children with cancer in Palliative Care when facing the anticipatory bereavement. The results of the study revealed, through the nurses' reports, that nursing assistance, provided to children with cancer in Palliative Care who are terminally ill, contemplates the concepts of the Peaceful End-of-Life Theory. Conclusion: This study allowed the analysis of the nurses' performance, regarding the nursing assistance provided to children with cancer in Palliative Care who are terminally ill and to their family members in the light of the Peaceful End-of-life Theory. The results highlight this theory's relevance to support the nurses' care practice when caring for children with cancer in Palliative Care who are terminally ill and their families. |
