Resumo: The present work investigates the relationship between cognitive and behavioral strategies of preparation of a performance project, with the management of musical performance anxiety (MPA) in situations of high stress. Participating in the case study was a masters of interpretative practices of the Federal University of Paraíba, using an approach based on self-report. The Implementation Guide Protocol proposed by Chaffin et al. (2002) was used to guide the construction of cognitive abilities; the technique of systematic desensitization adapted by Appel (1976) for a musical activity served to guide the construction of behavioral skills. The methodology consisted of: (1) Study of the Third Brazilian Suite of Oscar Lorenzo Fernández supported by the protocol of Chaffin with record in the scores and in the book of annotations; (2) Planning of four progressively more stressful performance situations; (3) Audio and video recording of the performance project tests in the four planned situations; (4) Data analysis. The preparation work for the performance situation provided reliable support to the study subject. The robustness of the cognitive and behavioral abilities built in the process is observable by the levels of fluency of musical discourse and fidelity to the musical text presented in the four tests. We consider that the type of memory produced from the study with guides of execution and that is based not only on automatism but also on descriptive memory, was fundamental to minimize the feelings and ideas of uncontrollability, vulnerability and unpredictability typical of the state of anxiety. Thus, during the tests, there was a progressive increase in the level of performance, observable by the reduction in the occurrence of cognitive-motor deficits caused by musical performance anxiety.
