Resumo: This dissertation aims to analyze the syntactic approach performed by Nova Grammatica Analytica da Lingua Portugueza (NGALP) (1881) by Charles Adrien Olivier Grivet (1816-1876). The general objective of this research is to investigate the main syntactic knowledge elaborated by the referred author in NGALP. To make this possible, we sought to understand the political and sociocultural events and ideas that encompassed the production of the grammar. In addition, we describe and interpret the syntactic knowledge systematized in it, we identified movements of continuity and rupture with the grammatical tradition established by the author and contrasted the metalanguage and definitions present in the work with other theoretical models of language studies. The work is situated in the area of Historiography of Linguistics, which proposes to interpret, through descriptive and explanatory narratives, how knowledge about language was produced in a certain social and cultural context through time (SWIGGERS, 2009). The main theoretical and analytical categories that guided the work were the treatment of metalanguage (KOERNER, 2014a, 2014c), the influence (KOERNER, 2014b; BATISTA, 2020a; ALTMAN, 2018), the rhetoric (BATISTA, 2018, 2019, 2020a, 2020b; MURRAY, 1998; SWIGGERS, 2014, 2019) and in particular the layers of linguistic knowledge (SWIGGERS, 2004, 2019, 2020a, 2020b). After familiarization with the work and its previous reading, we highlight the main points to be addressed in the syntactic analysis performed by Grivet and, with the help of the layers of linguistic knowledge, we structured the analysis in four parts, each corresponding to a given layer: contextual, theoretical, technical and documentary. In the contextual layer, we show that the author does not propose to break with the tradition of linguistic studies, but to show new possibilities for analysis. In theoretical layer, we discuss the author’s linguistic conception, especially regarding syntax. In this part, we have substantially discussed i) the theory of functions; ii) the centrality of fact (verb); iii) the understanding of syntax as functions exercised by words; and iv) the critique of noun verb theory. In the third layer of knowledge, the technical, we approach techniques of analysis and methods of data presentation of the material investigated, exposing the taxonomic network operated by Grivet. Finally, in the fourth layer, the documentary, we explore the constitution of the documentation used for the linguistic description of the grammar. In addition to the analysis of the work, we also conducted a survey, in the Brazilian Hemeroteca and in the Swiss National Library, of other sources that would provide us with more information about Grivet and his work.
