Resumo: The object of study of this thesis is defined as the social representations of masculinities within gender relations, understood as gender relations as a cultural construction of a basic form of power relations, and masculinities as forms of identity, multiple, complex and intersected. Masculinities have been the object of research in the various fields of knowledge production, especially those guided by feminist theory. However, there are few studies that correlate social representations and masculinities, as well as studies that focus on the social representations of masculinities of high school students, and in the structuralist aspect they are non-existent. The concept of social representation (SR) is understood, in this research, from the definition given by Moscovici and Jodelet, a form of knowledge, socially elaborated and shared, having an objective practical and contributing to the construction of a common reality to a social group. Thus, the objective of the thesis is to identify the social representations that young high school students in the State of Pernambuco have of masculinities, locating their possible central and peripheral elements, in an intersectional perspective. The specific objectives include: raising the social representations of masculinities of high school students in the state of Pernambuco; to delimit the central and peripheral elements of masculinity representations and their implications; distinguish, from intersectionality, possible singular social representations of masculinity; to indicate the components of the central nucleus of the predominant social representation of masculinity of high school students in Pernambuco. This research is characterized by a mixed, qualitative and quantitative applied methodological approach. The production of empirical material was based on the Free Word Association Technique (TALP), applied through an online cascade questionnaire and structured interview. 121 (one hundred and twenty-one) high school students from eight cities in the interior of Pernambuco participated in the research. The results indicate that their social representations of masculinities are structured around the elements man, machismo and strength. And also that identities marked by sexual diversity and religious diversity have, most likely, a representation of masculinity different from the large group, especially in the exclusion of the male element as a central element. Heterosexuality, for the researched group, did not present itself as a salient element of masculinity. Understanding the structure of the social representation of masculinity is an important resource for the implementation of policies, projects and programs aimed at the issue of masculinities within gender relations at school. The thesis suggests the need for further research to better verify the central core and peripheral system of social representations of masculinities in basic education students, especially groups identified with markers of difference, such as sexual orientation, spirituality and race/ethnicity.
