Resumo: The 1990s highlighted the creation of new business dynamics focused on environmental responsibility. As a result, environmental management underwent a process of change featuring economic innovation and new managerial attitudes toward the use of natural resources and ways of dealing with social problems. In this context, sustainability emerges as a balance of economic, social/cultural and environmental interests. In the tourism sector, this concept is incorporated into the hotel business in an attempt to improve the efficiency of natural resource use and the quality of life in communities where tourism is carried out. This is achieved via the appreciation of local customs (rather than solely appropriation of spaces) and by respecting the particularities of conserving each specific environment. As a result, sustainable technologies and practices have been incorporated into the environmental management of many companies and new legal obligations and business incentive programs have been developed in order to reach this objective. Through an interdisciplinary analysis of business administration, tourism, and law, the following study analyzes environmental management in lodging facilities in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba, as evidenced by the incorporation of sustainable technologies and practices, the extent to which guests are held to environmental and social responsibility standards, and the overall level of sustainability in hospitality management in the municipality. These metrics are assessed based on a sustainability index developed to assess environmental management in hospitality. The methodology and standards associated with the index are described in detail within the analysis. For data collection, questionnaires with owners/managers, employees and guests, in a group of 14 hotels, were applied in order to characterize them and assess how each actor participates in the process of environmental management in the hotels. Through interviews, it was possible to identify ways to enhance eco-friendly practices by developing partnerships among the business community, non-profit organizations, and the public sectors.
