Water is a vital natural resource on Earth. Its quality has been altered alarmingly fast, mainly as a result of human population increase. Several urban problems have arisen in large cities as a consequence of high population densities and among them the capital of Paraíba State, the basic sanitation problems of the district of Alto do Mateus are particularly its water, unfit for human consumption and the lack of adequate sanitation. It was aimed in the present work to estimate the water quality, human health and the diseases especially spread from water use. The results here obtained showed a bad water quality and extremely low concerns of the local population related to hygienic habits, which are certainly the most important factors generating favourable conditions for spreading epidemic diseases. In the conclusions, one of the main points emphasized is the need to make the governmental water management Institution (CAGEPA) aware to improve its water quality services and sanitation conditions, turning them compatible with a healthy and good quality of human life
