Resumo: The management of occupational accidents is becoming a very important part of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) as it is a tool to identify risks that may lead to occupational accidents or diseases. Besides that, its application presents a broad and detailed view of the risks with a respective assessment of their relevance. That is, by using risk management techniques it is possible to identify and classify the risks and thus prioritize the actions and resources for their control. In this context, the current study presents the result of a case study on the process to improve the Risk Assessment technique, one of the tools used by steel making ArcelorMittal Tubarão to manage the risk of occupational accidents. The study aimed at studying the OHSMS to analyse the risk management model through the use of the risk assessment technique, thus being able to know the whole process developed by the company to improve the risk assessment process. Finally, with the purpose of knowing the relevance of using the Risk Assessment technique in one of ArcelorMittal Tubarão operational units, the implementation of the improvement actions were analysed during blast furnace maintenance shutdown. The result of the study showed that the company has followed OHSMS concepts of continuous improvement from OHSAS 18001 and, supported by its Health and Safety Policy, identified failures in the application of the Risk Assessment, prepared and implemented a corrective action plan. The results of the implementation of the improvements were positive for ArcelorMittal Tubarão since 12 months after that it was possible to notice, through this case study the improvements in the application of the Risk Assessment as it will be presented in chapter 4.
