Resumo: | The present study discusses the educational and legal contributions of Joāo Alcides Bezerra Cavalcanti between 1907 and 1938. For such, his itinerary was traced since the beginning of the Law course at Recife Law School in an attempt to demonstrate his theoretical references and his intellectual maturation. As it follows, I analyzed the period in which Alcides Bezerra held bureaucratic positions in Paraiba education, as general inspector of education and as general director of public instruction. In this period, I examined documents that he collaborated and co-authored, the Reform of Education (1917) and the Public Instruction Report (1921), respectively. At the time, these documents, which were based on the ideals of progress and civility, played a significant role in the project of modern education in the First Republic. While the Reform of Education (1917) outlined the regulatory guidelines, the Public Instruction Report (1921) analyzed the results of implemented measures, illiteracy, teaching supervision, and the organization of schools. The latter also indicated possible solutions to such challenges. After moving to Rio de Janeiro, Alcides Bezerra was committed to the Ariel Newsletter, the National Archive issues, as well as conferences, and university education. Alcides Bezerra also participated in various sociability networks and associations, in addition to structuring Rio de Janeiro Law School. In these contexts, I sought to demonstrate from a legal point of view that the intellectual rose educational discussions in his writings. As well, this dissertation brings educational contributions from a legal point of view by interweaving sources and ideals shared by the fields of education and Law in the Vargas Era. From a methodological point of view, this is a qualitative and exploratory literature review underpinned by scholars such as Sirinelli (2003) and Bobbio (1997). This study also establishes connections with the New Cultural History and with categories of circulation of ideas, itinerary and sociability network. Data consisted of books, legislation, reports, assessments, printed issues and other documents that served as instrument for the dissemination of Alcides Bezerra’s ideals. During this research, we noticed that due to the diverse positions Bezerra held and the contexts in which he acted, it is possible to identify the ideal conservative-liberal, as well as concepts of civility and patriotism that guided his positioning in the republican period. Hence, this study intended to demonstrate Alcides Bezerra’s intellectual heritage. It also sought to illustrate the necessity to observe history and understand the traces covered by a series of notables that brightened the public sphere so as to elucidate that what is experienced today constitutes an unfolding of practices previously implemented. |
