Resumo: The purpose of this work is the study of a defect that occurs on the surface of ceramic pieces produced in the root unit in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RNThe defect, which was termed internally as "contaminação estourada", when in low quantity and not visible at a meter away, can be tolerated. However, it causes loss of quality of the finished product because it has small torn holes. This problem is of great relevance to the company in question, since it has currently compromised the production of ceramic tile from the unit by about 20 to 30%. In this sense, an in-depth investigation was carried out to characterize this defect, in order to know the factors that generate it, and also to present a methodology for the solution of the problem. To do so, it was initially based on a bibliographical review of previous studies published in print or virtual media, as well as laboratory tests on samples of materials, possible contaminants of the ceramic products manufactured by this company. The findings of the research indicate that the defect is caused by the presence of Biotite, of the Biotite type, present in that factory unit deposit.
