Resumo: Introduction: In high-performance soccer, in addition to the players' physical, technical and psychological qualities, the competence to make the right tactical decisions, and to translate them into actions, is becoming increasingly important for achieving good results in matches. Aside from the tough rivalry with other teams, the competition within the team itself for a place in the starting line-up is constant, even more so in the youth ranks, where players must prove their talent all the time. The opportunities are sometimes scarce, and the status of first choice or reserve player in the team can be a key determinant of whether the athlete will have a future at the professional level. Objective: To detect the differences between first choice (FCP) and reserve (RP) players in terms of individual physical, technical, psychological and tactical factors. Additionally, player profiles were determined according to their field position and the correlations between components of performance. Methodology: Forty under-19 athletes (18 and 19 years old) from the youth categories of two federated soccer clubs participated in the study. They underwent physical, technical, psychological and tactical intelligence tests. For five consecutive days, data collection was carried out in a concentrated manner on a soccer field, with anthropometric measurements on day 1, physical tests (30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test, Illinois Test, 30m Speed Test, and Jump Test) on day 2 and 3, technical tests (dribbling, passing and kicking accuracy) on day 4, and, on day 5, the application of the psychological test Psychological Skills Inventory for SportsYouth version-Short Form along with the TaticUp tactical intelligence test. Data analysis was performed using SPSS - 20.0. For each research objective, a corresponding analysis was used: a t-test and a logistic regression for article 1, a one-way ANOVA for article 2. Results Article 1: The ST presented better results for the tactical and mental factors than the RP (P<0.05). There was no difference between the groups for the physical and technical factors. Results Article 2: In general, there were differences between the physical, tactical and technical demands according to the positions. However, these differences were not significant (P>0.05), except for the indicator dribbling (P<0.05; eta2=0.17). Conclusion: According to our hypothesis, the factors in the model significantly explain the status of the player in the team. However, they are not related to the players position on the field, which indicates an influence of other exogenous variables that were not part of the study. It is hoped that the findings of this research may contribute to guiding coaches and technical committees in training methodologies with a view to improve the training of young football players.
