Resumo: The communication of news of the diagnosis of Down syndrome (DS) is always a delicate moment for professionals and an impact for the family, especially for the mother. Therefore, there is a need for the skills of the doctor and health team to minimize the negative repercussion of the news. Thus, the role of the doctor, usually the pediatrician, is paramount in the initial reception and in the family's adaptation process. It is justified by the high incidence of DS, 1 in 600 live births, in addition to the narrative of mothers in the literature, who describe the news as a traumatic moment. Objectives: To know the experiences of mothers and doctors about communicating the diagnosis of DS, with a view to producing and disseminating audiovisual / documentary material on the subject. Method: Initially, a narrative review of the literature was carried out. Afterwards, a qualitative, exploratory and cross-sectional field research was carried out. 9 mothers of children with DS participated, 6 pediatricians and 1 obstetrician. Data collection took place between June and October 2020, in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted, which were recorded in audio and video, in order to take advantage of the images in the production of audiovisual material, of the genre documentary. Results: The disclosure of the diagnosis, for both mothers and doctors, in different proportions, is a complex and difficult experience. The mother's impact upon receiving the diagnosis generates feelings of denial, fear, revolt, sadness, confusion, guilt, among others. It was possible to clarify that doctors and mothers agree on the lack of preparation to communicate unexpected diagnoses and emphasize the importance of building this skill during academic training. Final considerations: Although, it is known that regardless of the form of communication, it will always be a critical and painful time for mothers and family members, it is believed in the use of communication strategies to minimize the initial impact. Among them, wait a few hours for the mother and baby to get to know each other and start building the bond and, subsequently, inform, preferably with mother and father together in an environment with privacy. At that moment, preferably, start the communication from what the parents already observed in the baby, stimulating questions in the parents, which should be answered in a clear, affectionate and empathic way. In addition, it is up to the doctor to highlight healthy aspects of the baby and present advances in scientific knowledge of the syndrome that favor the child's development, learning and social life. For this, it is necessary to update the professional in relation to scientific publications and, in addition, to know and inform about nearby support networks, such as parents' association, specialized care places, among others. The product built was a social audiovisual technology, a documentary, built from research. It is available on YouTube and on the master's page. He was referred to associations of parents and health professionals. In addition, it is useful in undergraduate and graduate courses in the health field and in training and continuing education courses.
