Resumo: |
Third molar extraction is one of the most frequent surgeries practiced in dentistry. Prescription of medical drugs before and after the procedure still raises several questions, and established protocols are hard to find in the literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of the dentist's profile on the choice of medication for pre and postoperative care in surgeries of impacted and semi-impacted third molars. An online questionnaire was set up on the “Google Forms” platform and sent to dentists in Brazil with the aid of “Instagram”, “Facebook” and “WhatsApp” social media groups for divulgation. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed, according to the outcomes “class of medication used before and after surgery” and “way of administration”, and the absolute and relative frequencies of the variables were calculated. A total of 310 questionnaires were answered by professionals. Most of them are over 40 years old, male, and dental specialists who work in the private practice. More than half had specific training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Antibiotics are prescribed in the postoperative period by more than half of the participants, and few prescribe them preoperatively. Antibiotic prophylaxis is also not widely used. Amoxicillin was shown to be the antibiotic of choice in pre and postoperative period by almost all the dentists who answered the questionnaire, for patients not allergic to the drug, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are not commonly prescribed in the preoperative period, but 71.9% of the professionals who answered to the survey prescribe them in the postoperative period, with enphasis on ibuprofen (32.7%). Corticosteroids were 37.7% of drugs prescribed in the preoperative period, and the vast majority of participants prescribed them in the oral way of administration. Almost all professionals prescribe analgesics in the postoperative period, and dipyrone was the drug chosen by 57% of the participants. Professionals often mentioned postoperative recommendations and few participants related complications in this period. A great variability was detected in the answers about drug prescription for the pre and postoperative period of third molar surgeries, and there seems to be no relationship between the dentist's profile and the choice of the drug protocol. |
