Resumo: This very research is linked to the Master in Education at PPGE/UFMT and its main objective is to comprehend the manager’s action in the continuing education process at school as well as to investigate if it contributes to the construction of a democratic school. It is a qualitative research with the utilization of interview as data collection source, along with document analysis. The study focuses on two categories of analysis: the first one is related to Democratic Management and the second category highlights Continuing Education at school. These categories, on their turn, are based on three stages of the research: the director’s view, the view of the pedagogical coordinators responsible for the educational process and the view on the official documents that regulate such continuing education procedures. The main theoretical and methodological references were based on Nóvoa (1997), Freire (1982, 1988, 1989, 1997, 2000), Carvalho (2005), Imbernón (2009, 2010), Contreras (2002), Paro (1993, 1997, 2007), Libâneo (2000), Apple e Beane (2001), Ferreira (1999, 2003), Luck (2000), Guimarães (2004, 2006, 2008), Vasconcelos (1995), Bogdan e Bilklen (1995), Lüdke e André (1986), among others. It was found that all policy proposals by school directors, while candidates for elective office have a look on continuing education, although under different aspects, as an essential factor for achieving spaces of dialogue and reflection, making more democratic relationships possible at school. The interviews with the managers (director and coordinator) of five municipal schools in Rondonópolis, state of Mato Grosso, subjects of this investigation, revealed the necessity of more participation of both the external and internal community in the organization and school management processes, since it is one of the primary factors for the constitution of a democratic school. Another relevant finding is the fact that some schools still do not have a Continuing Education Program which is clear and gives support to the continuing education process developed in the school itself. Some hotspots come out of the managers’ discourse, such as little effective teachers’ participation in the continuing education meetings that are offered at school, as well as in the necessary decision-making process for the qualitative development of the school itself, although the educational process offered in such space is considered essential.
