Resumo: | ABSTRACT: The theme of this research is the decision-making process of women who chose to breastfeed exclusively during the first six months of life of their children. The objectives were to comprehend how the decision-making process of breastfeeding mothers happened in these conditions out of their experiences, and to comprehend, in every experience, how the offered educative practices contributed to the decision of breastfeeding. To this end, a qualitative and exploratory case study was conducted in a charity hospital that followed the criteria of being a Baby Friendly Hospital (BFH) in Cuiabá-MT. In this task, we selected the study subjects composed of nine women who breastfeed exclusively until their children reached six months of age, residents of Cuiabá-MT. For data collection, we used the semi-structured interviews technique and for the organization of the field material, we chose the thematic analysis. Data analysis was done in a comprehensive manner and divided into two major categories, namely: a) Experience devices to become a breastfeeding mother and b) Educative experiences that surrounded the decision-making to exclusive breastfeeding. The first category was comprehended from the following meaning cores: Emotion as a way of decision; desire and instinct; family and social networks. The second major category was comprehended in and out of the relations women established with the health professionals and the health care system, with two meaning cores which are: the Knowledge and lifetime experience addressed by professionals and contributions from the health care system to help the decision-making of exclusive breastfeeding. The results show the elements of emotion facilitate the assimilation and comprehension of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding as directed by health professionals in their health education activities targeting these breastfeeding mothers and reinforce the importance of these practices as being an integral part of the care process provided by health/nursing professionals. The dialogue established between professionals and breastfeeding mothers during educative practices oriented to exclusive breastfeeding was comprehended as a decision-making process crossed primarily by the breastfeeding mother's desire in its concretion, and came strengthening the women's autonomy to this purpose. Health professionals came as supporters of the process, looking for educative strategies to keep the desire and to minimize difficulties. We concluded the different conceptions that subjects bring about what is exclusive breastfeeding can lend elements to enhance the educative practices in this area and enable new transformative approaches of the current reality of the exclusive breastfeeding. |
