Resumo: | Studies suggest that overweight in adolescence may increase the risk of obesity in adulthood. It has been observed that the decrease in sleep time increases the risk of overweight and obesity. Objective - To assess the scientific evidence of the association between sleep duration and overweight in adolescents. Methods - The search for articles using the following keywords: sleep, obesity, overweight, adolescent contemplated six electronic databases (ADOLEC, MEDLINE, LILACS, Web of Sciences, SCOPUS, and Cochrane) and included articles published up to September 2011, with no restrictions dates, languages, journal or study design. We selected studies that examined the association between sleep duration and overweight in adolescents. Assessment of agreement between reviewers was assessed in steps of selection and methodological quality of the selected studies. Results - The 33 articles that contemplated the eligibility criteria showed great heterogeneity in the research tools of hours of sleep, in the classification of body mass and forms of analysis of the association. Twenty-three studies showed an inverse association between sleep and body mass index. Conclusion - Qualitative analysis of the evidence suggests that short sleep duration is associated with overweight in adolescents and can be enhanced with the quantitative analysis of the results. |
