Resumo: Torto arado, a contemporary novel written by Itamar Rangel Vieira Junior (2019), portrays stories of women who impose themselves in the face of problems that arise, showing themselves to be the protagonists of their lives, and, thus dismantling the diminutive view of the authors' perspective on women in society. In this scenario, this work aimed to understand female representation in Torto arado and, for this, some specific objectives were necessary, such as: understanding how the category of woman has been constructed, legitimized, questioned and maintained in the context of women's history , based on gender relations and discussions that permeate the questioning of male and female roles as a form of resistance to patriarchy; (re)know the technical and structuring elements of the narrative; and analyze how the characters, Bibiana and Belonísia, were constructed from the point of view of the elements of the narrative, that is, character (narrator and focus), time and space. Given this intention, this bibliographical research was configured as qualitative and for its development it was necessary to resort to the theoretical contribution of the studies of Gérard Genette (1972), Antonio Candido (1972; 2000), Norman Friedman (2002), Vítor Manuel de Aguiar e Silva (2011), Benedito Nunes (1995), Margareth Rago (1991; 1998), Angela Davis (2017), among others. The awareness that literature reflects reality provides support for the relevance of this work, as through the sisters' narratives, many women can see themselves represented. Therefore, by immersing ourselves in this subject, the intention was to expand the horizons of dialogue on the study of the feminine, regarding the historical journey of women as a means to deepen the understanding of female identity and women's struggles to bring to light issues that are intrinsically related to the construction of gender and power relations in society, thus considering a more comprehensive view of the social, economic and cultural conditions that shaped their lives. In this sense, the studies in this thesis realized that Vieira Junior's (2019) characters escape mere female stereotypes, considering that representation in Bibiana and Belonísia is not only a matter of reflecting their personal stories, but also of transmitting the complexities of rural women's experiences in the northeastern hinterland, such as: unpaid domestic service, the struggle for the right to their own identity, for justice regarding family and community relationships and against the male domination present in history and violence (physical, sexual, emotional and structural). Keywords: Contemporary Brazilian literature; Women's history; Empowerment; Female representation.
