Resumo: | Suicidal attempts have become a severe public health problem. In adolescence, it becomes a warning sign. The present study aims at outlining these youngsters profile and understanding and interpreting their perceptions, ideas, feelings and attitudes towards the family environment and their interpersonal and affective relationships as well as regarding their motivation, planning, consequences and measures adopted after the attempt. Seventy-one medical record files were evaluated of teenagers between 12 and 17 years old who were admitted in a public ER between August 2008 and July 2009, diagnosed with exogen intoxication, be it intentional or accidental. In a second moment, 10 teenagers who used psychoactive drugs were interviewed. Most of the cases involved girls averaging 15,2 years of age. The most commom term used in diagnosis was intoxication by means of medication ingestion followed by poison ingestion. The majority of attempts happened in their own residence. Relationship conflicts appeared most frequently as motive. From these, familiar conflicts were the most commom. The interview results were grouped in eight categories: interpersonal relationships; everyday life; self-image; contact with psychoactive medications and other drugs; attempt history; perception, attitude and feelings of the teenagers after the attempt; therapeutic follow-up after the attempt; relationship with health professionals. The ambiguity of feelings, lack of dialogue and intimacy and the lack of activities in life as well as conflict sedation, inability of communication and the feeling of not belonging were raised as important life conditions of these young persons. This study can be useful to help in the diagnosis and also in the creation of assistential and preventive politics towards the youngsters in order to offer support to both the adolescents and their relatives and others involved. The main merit is to give the adolescents who attempted suicide a voice and present their perception on the issue. Besides knowing the problem, we need to find more effective ways of intervention |
