Resumo: Though many authors have been trying to define Manager since the beginning of the last century, they could not reach a consensus on the required abilities for good performance at managerial level. Furthermore, one has to take into account the deep changes in the business world due to globalization as well as to technological development. These changes certainly demand more and more qualification from a manager but, on the other hand, they do not favor the creation of a theoretical pattern of managerial practice because of the complexity of the several different tasks undertaken by these professionals. This survey focussed on managers of small industries located in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte. Its aim was to identify if such professionals generally disregarded by researchers present traits of flexibility allowing them to a closer approach to the new managerial trends. We got an affirmative answer for the questions proposed. Not only do managers of small companies present an a professional background enabling them to perform their tasks suitably, but they are also committed in updating information and techniques through courses, books, technical magazines and journals, and the Internet.
