Resumo: This thesis developed a management support model to achieve the sustainability of post- consumer reverse logistics chains for special solid waste, aiming to evaluate and propose improvements for the management of such residues. The management support model proposed in this study was grounded on the concept of sustainability as defined by Enrique Leff (2000) and started from the assumption that the model proposed by Elkington, known as “Triple Bottom Line”, should be expanded through the incorporation of the cultural and institutional dimensions. This thesis was organized into separate articles and the first article was prepared with the objective of deeply understanding what sustainability is. Through bibliographic review and documentary research, crucial issues for this work were addressed, such as: “What is sustainability (in its ontological sense)? What are the dimensions and assumptions of sustainability according to this broader and deeper view? What is the relationship between sustainability and its stakeholders? What concept of sustainability should be adopted in this work?”. The second adopted the systematic literature review and bibliographic review methods. All keywords were systematically analyzed to carry out a systematic literature review, as well as to justify the study by identifying theoretical gaps and attesting to the relevance and originality of the theme. The third article aimed to clarify whether green and sustainable supply chains have the same meaning and use within the field of operations management and logistics. If not, which of these chains meets the concept and requirements of sustainability adopted in this study, as defined in the previous article. To this end, we resorted to the systematic literature review and bibliographic review methods. At the end of this article, a public management model focused on the sustainability of post- consumption reverse logistics chains for special solid waste was proposed. This model was exclusively based on the results of bibliographic reviews and demonstrated in detail through a framework based on the Venn diagram and sustainability indicators. The fourth article was designed to validate this framework using focus group methods (with the participation of specialists from different fields of knowledge with extensive experience in the subject), as well as descriptive statistics. In addition, this article also aimed to listen to these experts and, from the abstraction of their speeches, create new theoretical constructs regarding the measurement of the dimensions of sustainability as adopted in the proposed model. To this end, we adopted the Grounded Theory method, which comprised a methodological path that included focus groups in the data collection phase and the QDA method in the qualitative analysis of the data. The outcome of this article was the proposal of a feasible model that would translate sustainability broadly, deeply, and practically. Finally, the final remarks identify the theoretical and managerial contributions, the limitations, and opportunities for further research.
