Resumo: This research deals with a sociological analysis of the musical listening processes of young students of the College of Application of the Federal University of Acre, Brazil. For this analysis, 3 focus groups were carried out with 14 young students each, who discussed themes about their relationship with music. Through the analysis of the students speeches, listening was highlighted as the most practiced musical activity among them, which shows that the act of listening is configured as a complex experience generating different effects in their personalities, such as cognitive, intellectual, sentimental, functional, and psychological processes. During the analysis, 13 different listening modes were highlighted and discussed based on different ways of experiencing the musical listening assigned by the students. The theoretical foundation of the research is based on conceptions of listening situations provided by Ola Stockfelt (1997), the active listening and the musicality of listening developed by Daniel Cavicchi (2003), and the social analysis of the music developed by Tia DeNora (2004). This research seeks a deeper understanding of young peoples processes of listening in daily life. It intends to contribute to the development of teaching approaches that include the universe of the youth, providing dialogue and space for a more significant musical development in diverse educational contexts, specially at school.
